Frequently asked questions

Back to TrekForge

Is TrekForge free?

Yes. There is no account and nothing to pay. You can leave a tip if you want to, but it unlocks nothing.

What do I need?

A GPX file, a 3D printer and a free slicer program. You can try an example first, with no file at all.

Where do I get a GPX file?

Most outdoor apps can export one, including Strava, Komoot, Garmin Connect, OS Maps and AllTrails. See how to export a GPX file.

Is my route kept?

No. It is held in memory, and deleted when you press Start over, or within 6 hours. The privacy notice has the detail.

Do I need two colours?

The route is a separate piece, so print the terrain, change filament, and print the route. A model in a single colour also works.

Do I need an API key?

No. A free OpenTopography key gives you sharper terrain from other sources, but it is optional.

What file types do I get?

STL files, which every slicer can open. You can download them separately or together as a zip.

Why doesn't my summit match the real height?

Elevation data is simplified and has errors. See terrain data and accuracy. Models are keepsakes, not survey tools.

Will it fit my printer?

The default 200 mm model suits a printer bed of about 220 mm or more. Change the Model size before you download if yours is smaller.

Can I sell prints of my model?

Yes, but keep the data credit shown with your model. See the terms and credits.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, though a computer is easier for checking a model and opening it in a slicer.

Does it work for diving or sailing routes?

Not well. It is made for routes on land, and seabed data is very coarse. See terrain data.

Something went wrong. What now?

Try troubleshooting, or tell me about it.
