How to export a GPX file

TrekForge / Guides

Most apps let you export a GPX file in a few clicks, and it is often easiest on the website, not the phone app. Menu names change from time to time, so look for Export, Download or Share if these differ.

Strava

  1. Sign in at strava.com in a web browser.
  2. Open the activity.
  3. Open the menu marked with three dots.
  4. Choose Export GPX.

Strava's phone app does not offer this, but the website works in a phone browser.

Komoot

  1. Sign in at komoot.com and open a tour in your profile.
  2. Choose Export to GPS device. The GPX file downloads.

In the app, open the route in your profile and look for Download GPX file. The region where a route starts may need to be unlocked first.

Garmin Connect

  1. Sign in at connect.garmin.com in a web browser, and open the activity.
  2. Open the cog menu at the top right.
  3. Choose Export to GPX.

OS Maps

  1. Open your saved route on the OS Maps website.
  2. Choose the option to export or download it.
  3. Pick GPX as the file type.

Files from OS Maps may have no height data. That is fine, because TrekForge takes heights from terrain data.

AllTrails

  1. Sign in on the AllTrails website, and open the trail or your activity.
  2. Open the menu marked with three dots.
  3. Choose Download route, then pick GPX Track.

This option is on the website, not in the app, and some downloads may need a paid plan.

Apple Watch and other watches

Apple's Workout app has no GPX export of its own. A recording app such as WorkOutDoors, or Strava, can give you a file instead. Most other GPS watches sync to an app that can export GPX.

If you have a FIT or TCX file

These are other activity formats, and TrekForge needs GPX. A free tool such as gpx.studio can open them and save a GPX file.

Hiding your start point

If your route starts at home, trim the first and last few hundred metres before you upload or share a model. Many apps let you crop an activity, and gpx.studio can also do this in your browser.
