What is a GPX file?
A GPX file is a record of where you went, stored as a list of map points. Most walking, running and cycling apps can export one, and most GPS watches create the data for it.
What is in it
- Positions. A latitude and longitude for each point along your route.
- Heights. Usually, though TrekForge takes terrain heights from map data instead.
- Times. Often, if the file was recorded on the move.
- Names. The name of the track or route.
- Extras. Some apps add things like heart rate. TrekForge ignores these.
Tracks, routes and waypoints
A track is a line you recorded. A route is a line you planned. A waypoint is a single saved place. TrekForge needs a track or a route, so a file with only waypoints will not work.
Why it matters for privacy
A GPX file can show where you live, work or walk, and who you were with. Before you upload or share one, consider trimming the start and end, particularly if it begins at your home. How TrekForge handles your data explains what happens to your file.
